15 Food Stalls In Old Airport Road Food Centre You Must Try
Built on the runway of Singapore’s old Kallang Airport following its closure in 1955, Kallang Estate Fresh Market & Food Centre was established in 1958 to serve the residents of Kallang Airport Estate. It had 172 stalls and was further extended in 1963, but was still inadequate in coping with the neighbourhood's demand. The solution was Old Airport Road Food Centre in 1972. When it was completed, it was the most modern hawker centre of its time with the latest architectural designs. The Old Airport Road Food Centre reflected the same design of food centres built in New Towns like Woodlands and Commonwealth Avenue in the 60s and 70s. These hawker centres were flat roofed and had two levels to cater to the needs of a dense neighbourhood. However, unlike the other hawker centres of the time, Old Airport Road Food Centre also had enough space to house other public and civic functions, such as a Post Office branch and a POSB ATM. Right from the get-go, the food centre became a popular haunt for locals in search of the cheap and good food. It was a convenient supper stopover for revellers after a night out in town. In recent years, the food centre also started seeing more tourists, and it is still regularly voted as one of the most popular hawker centres in Singapore!
