Good news for home chefs, vegetarians, vegans and fans of the Impossible Meat – as starting today, the company will be selling the plant-based product at NTUC FairPrice stores and online grocer RedMart.
Previously, only selected restaurants such as Park Bench Deli, Fatboy’s, Straits Chinese, Rubato Italian Kitchen & Bar, or online grocery Classic Fine Foods acted as platforms for customers to order and purchase the Impossible Meat, which was sold at a hefty $88.90 for 2.27kg packages.
In FairPrice and on RedMart, a 340g pack will sell for $16.90, or about $5 for 100g, which is still quite a bit more expensive than most supermarket ground beef.
Speaking to The Straits Times over a Zoom call, the company's CFO, Mr David Lee said the company was committed to reducing the price of its products, but would not say if Impossible has plans to open a plant in Asia to manufacture the plant-based meat.
Despite the higher price, many consumers are still willing to purchase the product for health reasons, and also because it leaves a smaller environmental footprint than meat from animals.
According to the company, a 113g conventional beef patty made from cows has 80mg cholesterol, 23g of total fat, 9g of saturated fat and 290 calories.
In comparison, a 113g serving of Impossible Beef contains no cholesterol, 14g of total fat, 8g of saturated fat and 240 calories.
In terms of carbon footprint, Impossible Beef also uses 96 per cent less land, 87 per cent less water and 89 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional beef from cows.
Formulated with the help of science, Impossible Meats are made entirely by plants, which is pretty unbelievable considering how close it tastes to the real thing. The plant-based meat is certified halal, kosher, and gluten-free. It is also incredibly versatile and can be used to substitute ground beef in any stews, chili, sauces, braises, minces, meatballs, meat pies or any other recipe that calls for ground beef.
If you need some inspiration on what you can make at home with the product, the company has also launched a cookbook with 40 different recipes, such as Szechuan Mapo Tofu, Vietnamese Imperial Rolls and Pan-Fried Chive Dumplings that can be found on Amazon SG.
