8 Ideas For Valentine’s Day When You’re Broke

Some celebrate with expensive dinners, the largest floral bouquets and even surprise trips overseas but, it’s the thought that counts right? We’re here to help you out with 8 Ideas For Valentine’s When You’re Broke:

  1. Cook Up A Storm For Her! ($15 – Steak and Potatoes)

Everyone loves a partner who can cook and in this day and age, it’s rare to find a man who can and even rarer to find a man who is willing to. Cooking for your partner is sure to score you some brownie points, and science even says that women find men who can cook incredibly sexy. Instead of going to an expensive restaurant, cook a simple but loving meal – like steak and potatoes, you can’t go wrong with that. If you don’t have a kitchen to call your own, bring your partner out for a picnic at one of Singapore’s many scenic picnic spots with some wine, cheese and of course good conversation. We love the recipe here.

  1. Craft Up Something Amazing! ($12 – Supplies from ArtFriend)

Nothing says “I love you” like a hand-made gift that can’t be found anywhere else – think handmade candles, cards and scrapbooks. The thoughtfulness behind the gift would go a long way and would be a nice memory for the couple to share. Got a little more budget? Look up one of of the many workshops available in Singapore and make Art & Craft an activity for both ala Ghost. Time well spent? Check. Something to bring home and remember a romantic date? Check.

  1. See The Great Outdoors! ($2 – Bus Ride To Macritchie)

Step outside the comfort of the house and that restaurant you’ve picked out 3 months ago and start the day off with a hiking day taking in Singapore’s lush greenery. From Treetop walks, to a UNESCO Heritage Site and 15km-long Green Corridor – there’s plenty of choices for you to get your partner’s heart rate up that early in the day. Bring along a water bottle, a towel and your phone to take that Instagram picture and you’re good to go! Bonus points for peace and quiet.

  1. Night At the Museum ($15 – Admission Ticket)

Museum’s get a bad rep for being boring but the wide range of museums in Singapore that have grown over the years make them an interesting destination – like the ArtScience Museum and the lesser known LKC Museum of Natural History. Exhibitions like FutureWorld and the magic of Disney’s Animation are interactive exhibits that will not only spark conversation but bring out the museum-goer in you. But seriously – where else in Singapore can you see a dinosaur bone at scale?

  1. Art Jamming ($30 – Art Jamming)

They say a picture paints a thousand words and what better way to say those three words to your partner by literally painting a picture of it! Art Jamming is a concept where workshop participants are given a blank canvas and painting materials to paint whatever they want – all under the careful guidance of experienced instructors. Restaurants like Arteastiq have even married the food and art jamming concept under one roof!

  1. Music Playlists ($14.99 – For The Subscription)

A long time ago, mixtapes were painstakingly made on cassette tapes (yes those!) and were a labour of love from one partner to another. Then it moved on to burning the playlists on CDs and these days it’s moved to Spotify (They even have a Valentine’s Day Love Playlist if you want to take the easy way out). Create a playlist to show your love for your partner and you could even use it as some background music for Idea Number 1 above! Pro-tip, you can even make these playlists “Collaborative” and mix some music together with your partner.

  1. “Flower” Bouquets ($30 – For a Chocolate Covered Bouquet)

Floral bouquets are at worst, cliché and at most, really expensive in Singapore so why not put a smile on her face and stand out from the crowd with some alternative “floral” arrangements. For the girl with the sweet tooth, why not get a Ferrero Rocher Flower bouquet? And for the girl with the savoury tooth, why not get a Fried Chicken Flower bouquet? Yes – these exist for a reason.

  1. Lunch/Dinner Deals ($30 – Suggested Per Pax Budget)

Let’s say that you’ve done all that and you still want to bring your partner out for a dinner date – you don’t have to break the bank to do that. Find Valentine Day deals at several restaurants, or even better celebrate the special day just a day after so that you don’t have to pay for an overpriced set menu. Finding the right restaurant takes a lot of effort and time and you’ll have to decide between the price, the food selection and ambience – and if you’re reading this now, you still have time!
