10 Food Stalls At Newton Food Centre You Must Try

10 Food Stalls At Newton Food Centre You Must Try

Opened in 1971, Newton Food Centre is Singapore’s first hawker centre built without a wet market. Street hawkers had been gathering at this crossroad for a weekly bazaar since the 1950s, and by 1960 it had become so popular the bazaar was held three times a week. Realising it was a significant intersection entering into town, the government decided to build a hawker centre here and touted it as “hawker stalls in a garden setting,” in line with PM Lee’s vision to turn the island into a garden city “within three years”. Since then, Newton Food Centre has remained as one of Singapore’s most popular food centres, and it has long been regarded as a must-visit tourist hotspot. Many locals were excited to see it featured in Crazy Rich Asians, but getting featured in a Hollywood movie probably didn’t help its case much. The prices here might be a tad higher but that’s not to say that it’s without its fair share of delicious local grub. With over 100 stalls to choose from, here are some of our favourite stalls in Newton Circus Food Centre!
