ICYMI, this chicken sandwich (or rather, burger) from Popeyes caused quite a stir when it first launched in the US last August. Just how big of a deal was it? Well, for one, it sparked a "chicken sandwich war" between fast food outlets, and the burger was also sold out within two weeks after its initial release!
Crazy stories also emerged on social media about how burgers were being sold on eBay for US$7,000. The mad rush for the burger even resulted in one fatality after a customer was stabbed for cutting a queue, and another customer pulling a gun on Popeye’s staff after being told that the sandwiches were sold out.
So it’s probably no surprise that this legendary chicken burger has made people shed tears at first bite.
This unassuming chicken sandwich was a huge driving force in helping the company boost revenue, with sales increasing by 42 percent in the last quarter of 2019 compared to the same period in 2019. And fans of the Popeyes’ chicken sandwich include celebrities like Cardi B, Serena Williams and Tamar Braxton.
So what is it that makes it so special? The chicken is said to be marinated for at least 12 hours in a secret batter consisting of Louisiana seasonings, and dragged in a special flour that makes the chicken extra crispy. The brioche bun is also coated with the same buttery topping that’s used on their biscuits.
The succulent slab of fillet used overseas is typically chicken breast, but to cater to local taste buds, the chicken sandwich in Singapore will feature locally-sourced chicken thighs instead.
We hear that the burger will also include freshly brined pickles and a spicy cajun sauce, and it will come as part of a meal with cajun fries and Pepsi for $7.90. Those looking to skip the queues can get it via Popeyes' delivery – the Sandwich Solo Meal at $10.90 will come with the chicken sandwich, fried mushrooms, mashed potatoes, and Pepsi.
However, the burgers are here for a limited time only from Sept 16 to Oct 14, with limited quantities available each day.
Our friends at TimeOut were able to try the burger ahead of its launch date, and from their review it’s safe to say, we have pretty high expectations!
It remains to be seen what kind of response the chicken burger will trigger here, and of course, how will it fare next to Singapore’s gold standard of chicken burgers: the McSpicy?
