Today we are going to look at some of the most popular stalls in Old Airport Road Hawker Centre. Built on the runway of Singapore’s old Kallang airport, Old Airport Road Food Centre is one of the favourite hawker centres for locals to get their fix of cheap good hawker food. With over 150 stalls to choose from, which ones do you make a beeline for?
1. Hua Kee Hougang Wanton Mee
Hua Kee Hougang Famous Wanton Mee has won several awards over the years, including a mention in the Michelin Guide Singapore. They serve a variety of noodles, from Wanton Noodles to Dumpling Noodles and Chicken Feet Noodles. Their signature dish is the Wanton Mee, which is cooked till perfectly QQ. It is served with a sweet and savoury sauce that’s not like the usual wanton mees you get out there!
2. Wang Wang Crispy Curry Puff
Made by hand in small batches by the couple who operates this hawker stall in, you can choose from the classic curry chicken and potato puffs, or other flavours such as the sardine puff. Everything is handmade fresh daily! Their best seller is the curry chicken – the pastry is perfectly flaky and buttery while the filling has just the right amount of spice!
3. Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee
Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee is known as the lor mee in Singapore (are they the best lor mee in Singapore? Click here to vote and let us know!) While other lor mee joints may now offer fancy toppings to catch up with the trend, Xin Mei Xiang focuses on perfecting the key elements of lor and mee, creating a slurp-worthy bowl that is really hard to beat.
4. Famous Old Airport Fried Oyster
As you can tell already, this stall specialises in fried oysters. Their orh lua is the perfect mix of cornstarch, egg and oysters. The outside is crunchy while the inside is soft, and the oysters are super fresh and huge! Of course, you have to pair it with their chilli that has a tanginess that cuts through the grease.
5. Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle
First started at Whitley Road in the 70s, the prawn noodle stall has since expanded with two more outlets. The current branch at Old Airport Road achieved the Michelin Plate in 2019 and continues to draw long queues of customers during lunch hour (vote here if they’re your favourite prawn noodles in Singapore! The robust prawn stock is just the right amount of sweet and briny. The fresh plump prawns, fried scallions, fragrant lard and al dente noodles all come together to create a satisfyingly harmonious dish!
6. Toa Payoh Rojak
Funnily enough, Toa Payoh Rojak isn’t located in Toa Payoh, but is instead at the Old Kallang Airport Hawker Centre. Now in the hands of their second generation owner, the stall has been in business for at least half a century. It costs between $3 to $5 for the rojak while you can add dough fritters, cuttlefish or century eggs for between $1 to $2.
