I Did A One-Day Juice Cleanse and This is How I Felt

We’re almost a month into the new year and I’m not sure about you, but I already feel like my body needs to detox and reset. Juice cleanses are said to reboot your body and mind, and I’ve always been curious about them. What was the hype all about? Maybe it was time to try one out for myself.

A juice cleanse is said to have innumerable benefits for the mind and body, from giving the digestive system a break to clearing up brain fog. I’ve read of people going for as long as 30 days, but that’s a little extreme for me. I’m just here to test the waters, so I’ll start off with a one-day juice cleanse!

Here in Singapore, Juice Remedy is a home-based business serving up daily doses of cold-pressed juices. Having met Lena and attended some of her yoga classes, I bit the bullet and ordered myself the Rainbow Restore & Revitalise Juice Pack ($69). This bundle is said to be the perfect holistic wellness pack – it supports the detoxifying process, keeps energy levels uplifted, enhances vitality and strengthens immunity all at the same time!

My order arrived on a Friday morning, just in time as I started my day. I was really excited to start, as I’m a huge fan of fruit juices to begin with, so the thought of treating my body to pure goodness and nutrients all day was a treat.

10 am: My very first taste of Green Warrior sent a shockwave through my system. Wow, I can really taste the coriander and ginger! Wow, now I’m really awake. It’s not unpleasant, but I can imagine that some people might not fancy the spicy, green, herby and mildly tart mix. Whatever, I know it’s good for me so I down it anyway. It might’ve been just 250ml, but I feel surprisingly full!

12 pm: Two hours later it’s time for my second bottle, Green Haven. As you can see, I was overeager and downed it before I could even get a picture. This one was much easier to get used to, but still leans towards the ‘green’ side. The apple helped to balance out the celery nicely and I really enjoyed the nice little ginger kick at the end. However, this is about the time I usually have brunch and I am starting to think about food…

2 pm: Mighty Power tastes just like the ABC juice I used to order regularly from fruit juice stalls at the hawker center, except that this is not diluted at all. I love how rich it tastes and it’s safe to say that this is my favourite bottle so far! I still have quite a few more to go, so let’s see if I change my mind along the way.

Oddly enough, my food cravings have gone away. My partner even ate his lunch within the same space and the smell of chicken rice was uncomfortable, but bearable. My energy levels are also great! I thought I would feel pretty lethargic without food, so I’m surprised I feel rather bright and alert. All the vitamins and nutrients must be doing something!

4 pm: Sunshine Divine tastes just exactly like what I imagine sunshine would taste like. This was also a really nice pick-me-up, and I can’t get over how fresh each bottle of juice has been. At this point in my cleanse, I am feeling great. It’s really exciting having something to look forward to every two hours and after this juice break, I feel ready to get back to work until it’s time to call it a day.

6 pm: How appropriate to wind down the day with Calm Essence (did I already mention just how much I love the names of the juices?!) The pineapple, pear, ginger and mint combination is like a tropical sunset in a bottle. This is my new favourite! Those who prefer their cold-pressed juices to taste more fruity than green will most definitely enjoy the latter half of this juice pack.

8 pm: Next up is Bliss Harmony, and once again, I have a new favourite. I basically chugged this one down. At this point, the whole no-food thing was getting to me. Something about not eating all day just didn’t feel right. To make up for the lack of food, I downed two to three glasses of water. Didn’t entirely do the trick, but definitely helped to suppress the hunger.

10pm: The last bottle of the day was Coco Milk. I’ll be honest, this very unique combination of coconut milk, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and pepper felt a bit like drinking cold curry gravy at first! But after some getting used to, I came to enjoy and appreciate it. Its thickness and savoury notes really helped to quell the cravings for food!

In line with the day’s theme of giving my body a break, I tucked myself into bed earlier than usual. Also because I was sure that if I had stayed up late, I would surely start to crave for food again.

The next morning, I woke up ready for food, but found myself being more mindful about my choices. I wasn’t just gonna throw away all my efforts by chowing down nasi lemak and fried chicken wings. The truth is, my beach bod did not magically appear overnight, and I don’t think all the accumulated consumption of junk food, meat and sugar was completely cleansed from my system with just one day. That said, I think there is something important about giving your body a break from time–to-time. Some rest, relaxation and cold-pressed juices could probably do everyone some good!

The truth is, you don’t even have to commit to a full juice cleanse to get started. Other than the Rainbow Restore & Revitalise Juice Pack, Juice Remedy also has 500ml juice packs to supplement your diet and help you attain your wellness goals, be it detox, weight loss, boosting your immunity or energy. You can also customize your own juice packs by choosing any three 500ml bottles!

Would I do a juice cleanse again? The answer is a resounding yes. And with the upcoming Chinese New Year just around the corner, I'm sure I'll find myself feeling like I need another detox very soon. But even if it isn't for a special occasion, I think that these juices are a great thing to add to your daily life!
