7 Must-Try Claypot Rice in Singapore

The claypot rice is the quintessential Cantonese comfort food. The rice is either pre-soaked or partially cooked, then, flames lick the claypot that’s also filled with chicken, lup cheong (Chinese sausage) and vegetables. With claypot rice, your patience is required, and it will be rewarded. Be satiated by the fragrance of the ingredients suffused with the subtle chao-tar aroma. 1. Tai Liok Claypot Chicken Rice

The stall used to be located at the second floor of Margaret Drive Hawker Centre and has since moved to Alexandra Village Food Centre. They are known for their fragrant dish of claypot chicken rice that comes with a generous portion of lup cheong and chicken meat! The rice is fragrant and considered to be wetter than the typical claypot rice which is usually on the drier side.

2. He Ping Claypot Rice

He Ping Claypot Rice serves a wide range of delicious Chinese cuisine and they’re particularly known for their delicious claypot rice that’s cooked the traditional way. Be prepared to wait 30 minutes or more if you did not reserve beforehand! There is something different about the way the dish is served – ingredients like the chicken chunks, chinese sausage, salted fish and duck egg are first removed before the gravy is poured in.

3. Yew Chuan Claypot Rice

Run by a husband-and-wife duo, Yew Chuan Claypot Rice has been in business for about 17 years now. Unlike other claypot rice stalls out there, they only serve one type of claypot rice cooked using a twice cooking method to get the rice all nice and roasted. Their Claypot Chicken Rice comes in many different sizes, from portions for one up to a large group.

4. Yuan Yuan Claypot Rice

The owner runs this store with his wife and an assistant, and the claypot rice is made by seasoning the meat in a special sauce for more than five hours. They are also popular for using hua diao wine in their famous claypot rice, which enhances the aroma and taste of the dish. As if that’s not irresistible enough, their claypot rice is cooked over a charcoal fire which imparts a yummy smoky taste!

5. Geylang Claypot Rice

Founded by Mr. Ng Kim Hock over 30 years ago, this famous claypot rice originated from a humble street stall in Chinatown before finding its home on the most colorful street in Singapore. Their signature dish is slow cooked to order over charcoal so as to infuse all the wonderful flavors into their carefully selected premium rice!

6. Lian He Ben Ji Claypot

This family-run stall has been handed down from father to daughter-in-law. Madam Lim has worked at hawker stores since she was 12 and the hawker life is in her blood. Now she manages Lian He Ben Ji  together with her sisters and cousin, an all-woman power team! Each claypot of rice is cooked from scratch by steaming over a gas stove for 5 minutes, before adding the ingredient and cooking over a blazing charcoal flame for another 20 minutes.

7. New Lucky Claypot Rice

Opened since 1979, the stall used to be located in Bukit Merah and Clementi but has since moved to its current location in Holland Drive. A Michelin Bib Gourmand stall, the signatures at New Lucky Claypot Rice include the Claypot “Wu Wei” Rice which comes with a mix of both chicken and Chinese sausages.
