Covid-19 has left a path of destruction in its wake, and another business that’s being pushed to the brink is local Bak Kut Teh chain, Founder Bak Kut Teh. Started in 1978 by Mr Chua Chwee What, the 42-year-old business might have to close its doors in two months. In light of the situation, second-generation owner Nigel Chua published a letter to the media calling to the public for help.
In his letter, Nigel said business has plummeted by 85 per cent over the last five months due to Covid-19 and the circuit breaker measures, which he described as the "most tiring, trying and difficult" time ever.
Unfortunately even as the circuit breaker was lifted and Phase 2 was announced, the situation did not turn for the better. Even now, the family continues to walk into empty restaurants with no diners in sight.
Founder Bak Kut Teh counts many celebrities among its fans, including pop singers like Jay Chou, Jam Hsiao and Eason Chan, as well as film stars like Chow Yun Fatt and Charmaine Sheh.
Nigel said that tourists, who make up a significant proportion of the chain’s customers, could not patronise the restaurants now because of travel restrictions imposed due to the pandemic.
In a last attempt to save the brand, Nigel announced that the chain will give over 30% off curated sets for dine-in customers from 17 July to 17 August at selected outlets. “This special discount is to thank you for your support during Circuit Breaker (we couldn’t have lasted this long without you) and to encourage you and your family to dine with us,” Nigel said.
The call for help was met with a mix of cheers and criticism. Many netizens rooted for him and said they would dine at his chain of four restaurants, while others called it a shameless PR stunt to drum up business, as Nigel lives a lavish lifestyle, owning three private properties, posh cars and expensive watches.
Some even gave Nigel advice to consolidate his business – which has four outlets – and focus on keeping standards consistent at his original flagship stall at Balestier. The business has also expanded to China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Indonesia, which are managed by overseas partners.

In response to the criticism, Nigel clarified to various media outlets that he lives “in a five-room HDB flat in Hougang”, although he owns three condominium properties jointly with his father and older sister. As for the claim that he drives posh cars, Nigel says: “I don’t even own a wheel from Ferrari,” Instead he drives a Toyota Vellfire, and his luxury watch pictured in some photos was also bought used and second-hand.
Though he didn't respond to the online comments, fearing that "it might make things worse", Nigel has taken note of the remarks regarding a drop in standards and has "had a long chat” with his dad in regards to food quality.
"In the next two months, we will reflect on this."
