5 Fried Carrot Cake to Try in Singapore

A popular hawker-style dish, made from radish cake that is stir-fried with eggs and other seasonings. Commonly known as 'chai tow kway' in the Teochew dialect, this dish is cooked  “black” with sweet dark soy sauce or “white” with eggs. Today we’re sharing our favourite fried carrot cake stalls in Singapore!

1. Ang Moh Kio 107 Carrot Cake

Ang Moh Kio 107 Carrot Cake serves fried carrot cake that’s not only affordable, they’re also rated as one of the top 10 best fried carrot cake in Singapore! Both black and white versions are available at either $3 or $4, and the long queues attest to their deliciousness. The owner has been at this for over 30 years, so you know he’s doing something right!

2. Ghim Moh Carrot Cake

Located in Ghim Moh market for more than 20 years, Ghim Moh Carrot Cake is one of the few stalls in Singapore that still make their carrot cake from scratch. Popular for its flavours and unique carrot cake texture, they are usually sold out by noon! Both the white and black version are well-balanced but if we had to pick one, we’ll go for the white which seems to have a stronger wok hei.

3. Fu Ming Cooked Food

A Michelin Bib Gourmand stall in Redhill, Fu Ming Cooked Food is popular for its soft black carrot cake. The stall owner adds a special dark sweet sauce to the dish not just once, but twice, giving it a shiny glaze and sweetness. They also steam their own carrot cake, and each piece of carrot cake is larger than usual, giving a great mouth-feel.

4. Chey Sua Carrot Cake

What’s different about Chey Sua Carrot Cake is that they only make white carrot cake! Their history dates back to 1950, and they continue to be a crowd favourite for many Singaporeans  today, with ​​several Michelin Bib Gourmand accolades under their belt. Come ready to wait, but every bite will be worth it!

5. He Zhong Carrot Cake

Just like Chey Sua, this family-run carrot cake stall also specialises in white carrot cake. They’ve been making their own based on a special recipe since 1973, and their chunky white carrot cake is unlike the usual carrot cake you’ll find elsewhere. The springy chunks of carrot cake are flavourful and generously topped with mildly salty chai poh. Chilli is also smeared on the top to add some additional flavour and spice!
