All About the Whipped Coffee Trend That's Taken Over the Internet – Dalgona Coffee

If you've scrolled through your social media pages in recent weeks, chances are, you’ve seen a post about someone whipping sugar, instant coffee and water together to be spooned over iced milk, thus creating the fluffy and creamy drink known as Dalgona Coffee.

And according to Google, Singaporeans love Dalgona Coffee. We’re number two in the world for searching it online!

This viral trend first gained prominence during the social distancing orders in South Korea. The coining of its name is credited to South Korean actor Jung Il-woo, who ordered a whipped coffee at an eatery in Macau during his appearance on a TV show. He likened the taste to that of Dalgona, a type of Korean honeycomb toffee.

So under the hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge, homemade versions of dalgona coffee began spreading on South Korean YouTube channels before going viral on TikTok, and it has now exploded all over the internet as the It-Drink of 2020.

If you've got instant coffee, sugar, and water in your pantry, you can make this. It'll go much faster if you have an electric mixer, but a regular whisk, arms ready to feel the burn and a good dose of endurance and patience will get you there too.

How to Make Dalgona Coffee

1. Combine 2 tablespoons granulated instant coffee, 2 tablespoon granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons hot water in a medium bowl. (You can reduce the amount of sugar for a less sweet drink!)

2. Vigorously whisk, by hand or with an electric mixer, until mixture turns silky smooth and shiny.

3. Continue whisking, until mixture turns from foamy to frothy to creamy and holds its lofty, foamy shape.

4. Fill a glass most of the way full with ice and milk, then dollop and swirl the whipped coffee mixture on top, mixing before drinking, if desired.
