8 Events to Catch in Singapore This March 2021

Just like that, the first two months of the year have gone by. After Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year festivities, March brings us new things to look forward to with the International Women's Day, St Patrick's Day and Earth Hour. This month, look forward to sakura displays, film events and shopping at an eco-friendly store!

Sakura Featuring Hello Kitty Floral Display

While we won’t be catching the sakura season in Japan this year, we can most definitely get a taste of it in a high-tea session, as well as a floral display at Gardens By The Bay. This year, a special guest is Hello Kitty, who you will spot at various attractions, including a Japanese-style garden, a hanami (flower viewing) picnic, and at a nodate (tea ceremony).

You can also participate in cultural programmes like traditional folk music and dance, taiko drum performances and Japanese tea demos. Make sure to register in advance!

When: Until 31 March 2021

The [Not-So] Convenience Store

Back until the end of March at National Design Centre, The [Not-So] Convenience Store is stocked with lots of eco-friendly alternatives. From reusables and sustainable alternatives, compost bins and even DIY fixes, you’ll find lots of goodies here.

Besides browsing, you can also bring your clean and unused reusable bags to be given to retailers and help them cut down on packaging waste, and also drop off small electronic items for e-waste recycling.

In commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore, The National Heritage Board is revisiting Singapore’s past. Learn more about the events leading up to the fall of Singapore, with a slew of curated programmes and special access tours to WWII sites.

Look forward to visiting the likes of Civilian War Memorial and Fort Siloso, embarking on insightful tours that touch on lesser-known stories, and attending talks with history experts and war veterans.

Running with Strippers 2021: This Close

Don’t get it wrong – no strippers will be involved at this event. Pasir Panjang Power Station will be housing the full-day arts affair, which places the spotlight on the creative pairings of local musicians and video artists in kaleidoscopic audio-visual gigs.

Expect a feast for your eyes and ears, as well as a diverse range of genres with pairings such as Cayenne x JJ Low, sl_owtalk x Yeyoon Avis Ann, BGourd x Tristan Lim, Jema x orderstudio and more. Make sure to also catch Planet – a part performance, part music and visual combo that revisits some of Shakespeare's most moving sonnets.

Picturing the Pandemic: A Visual Record of COVID-19 in Singapore

There’s a new exhibition in town, and it's very relevant to the times we're living in. In fact, this is the National Museum of Singapore’s first major exhibition that documents the Covid-19 pandemic in Singapore.

Called Picturing the Pandemic: A Visual Record of Covid-19 in Singapore, the exhibition documents contemporary events and developments in Singapore by collecting related artefacts and stories from the everyday Singaporeans.

The Singapore Trilogy

Theatre fans, here’s another one you shouldn’t miss. Playwright Robert Yeo has put together three plays – Are You There, Singapore? (1974), One Year Back Home (1980) and Changi (1997). Set across the late 60s to the mid-70s, the play follows two siblings and a friend who form a friendship as international students in London, but the relationship is put to the test when they return to Singapore to participate in politics with different ideologies. With deleted scenes from original manuscripts, new writing and a revised ending, this play provokes reflection about the staging of politics in a new nation.

When: 11 March to 21 March 2021
