7 Trending Social Media Challenges to Keep the Boredom Away!

While coronavirus continues to disrupt our familiar rhythms of life and leaving all of us stuck at home, those looking for ways to pass the time have gotten creative. From swapping clothes with your family to turning pillows into DIY dresses, here are different ways people are staving off cabin fever!

#FlipTheSwitch

Set to Drake's song “Nonstop,” the #FlipTheSwitch challenge involves two people standing in front of a mirror. One person holds still while recording the video on their phone. Meanwhile in the background, the other person dances to the music until the opening lyrics: “Look, I just flipped a switch (Flipped, flipped)", which prompts the room’s light to be switched off and on again, only to reveal that the two people have swapped their outfits and positions.

Many big names have jumped in, such as Gordon Ramsey and daughter Tilly, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, and Emily Ratajkowski and Josh Ostrovsky (aka The Fat Jewish).

#PillowChallenge

One of the latest "fashion" trends going viral on Instagram, the #PillowChallenge involves wearing a pillow as a dress along with a belt tied around the waist. You can add any other accessories you want to make the outfit as chic and couture as possible! Many celebs have joined in on the challenge like Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway, who recreated her look from her film The Princess Diaries and sent the internet into a frenzy!

#BlindingLightsChallenge

Here's a fun dance challenge that started on TikTok, set to "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd. You need three people to do it right, so what a perfect opportunity to get your parents in on this, like this dad giving it his all:

Or this family's hilarious skit:

Spell Your Name Workout

Here's a workout challenge to help you get moving! The directions are simple: Spell out your name and perform the exercise that corresponds to each letter. This challenge has been around for awhile, but it has made a comeback due to gyms closures and people staying home.

#GestureChallenge

A challenge that you can do sitting on your sofa or lying in your bed? Why not! The Gesture Challenge is a fun little game where you copy a set of hand emojis shown on your screen while matching the beat to the song Lalala (ilkan Gunuc Mix) by Y2K. Celebs like Justin and Hailey Bieber have tried the challenge and if you want to hop on the bandwagon, you can find the Instagram filter at @i.m.noel.

#DontRushChallenge

Set to the song Don’t Rush by British hip-hop duo Young T & Bugsey, this challenge is a fun viral trend you and your friends can take part in if you miss going out and getting dressed up! The challenge requires each person to shoot their own parts separately, and someone to combine them all.

You start off the video in your home wear with a makeup brush. Whether this means being in your bathrobe or PJs is up to you. Then you will then cover your phone camera with your makeup brush, ending the first part of your video.

Then you get glam and dressed up off camera! Once you're done you will restart recording. To give the effect that you got ready within seconds, start the recording with the makeup brush covering the phone camera the same way you ended the first part of your video, then pull the makeup brush away to reveal your transformation. Once you show off your incredible make up, toss your makeup brush off screen to give the illusion that you're passing it onto the next person.

#HandstandChallenge

The challenge was taken into the social media spotlight after Spiderman actor Tom Holland posted a video of himself struggling to complete it. He then went ahead and nominated fellow actor Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds to do the same.

Jake Gyllenhaal accepted Tom Holland’s handstand challenge and performed the challenge himself. Jake nailed the challenge, but Ryan Reynolds had a classic Ryan Reynolds expression and response: “no”.
