There is a longstanding debate: pancakes or waffles? We previously did an article on where to get your waffles and ice cream fix in Singapore, and today for #TeamPancakes, we've rounded up a list of places where you can get flippin' amazing pancakes and ditch the pancake mix!
Gram Cafe & Pancakes Singapore
The pioneer of Japanese souffle pancakes hailing from Osaka had queues snaking out the door when it arrived on our shores last year. Stacked in threes, the jiggly souffle pancakes are slathered in your choice of homemade butter, whipped cream or syrup. It’s so good, and needs so much effort to create, they are limited to just 30 servings 3 times a day between 11am to 6pm.
Wild Honey
A popular spot amongst breakfast fanatics, Wild Honey has just two pancake options: the Canadian consists of buttermilk pancakes served with candied bacon, hibiscus berry compote and Canadian maple syrup, while the Tahitian is a coconut-based pancake that comes with fresh mangoes, passion fruit, yoghurt and maple syrup – it's hard to choose between the two, and they almost look too good to eat!
Fluff Stack
This IG-worthy cafe with its millennial pink table serves up jiggly pancakes with honey butter, maple syrup, and chantilly cream. If you're a bubble tea lover, then make sure to try out their oolong boba soufflé pancake with gula melaka boba and oolong crème anglaise! Other versions such as the strawberry cheese, hazelnut chocolate and mango passionfruit are just as Instagrammable.
Curious Palette
If you prefer dense and cake-like pancakes over the light and airy ones, then the pancakes at Curious Palette will be for you. The Berry Ricotta Hotcake takes 20 minutes to make but we promise you the wait will be well worth it. It arrives at your table crispy on the outside, warm and cakey on the inside, generously topped with mixed seeds and strawberries along with a side of maple syrup.
Belle-Ville Pancake Cafe
Another pancake cafe from Osaka, Japan, Belle-Ville boasts a different type of pancake than what you'll find at other places – millefeuille. Handmade from scratch, these soft, meringue pancakes are spread with rich Hokkaido cream, fruits sandwiched in-between and depending on what order you order, they are stacked from 2 to 8 layers! Be prepared to wait 15 minutes and up though.
Clinton Street Baking Company & Restaurant
A hotspot for breakfast food, this is one joint to go to if you want the classic American pancakes – they’ve been dubbed “Best in the City” by New York Magazine twice! The foundation of great pancakes are made up of two things: top notch maple syrup and fresh butter, and that's exactly what you get here. They are topped with fresh blueberries and just the right crispness around the edges.
Group Therapy
Pancakes can be therapeutic, especially at Group Therapy. From the traditional pancakes that come with fresh fruits, honeycomb and maple syrup to the savoury ones paired with poached eggs and smoked salmon, you’ll be feeling satiated after your meal here. They even have blueberry and bacon pancakes for a mix of savoury and sweet if that's what you like!
Antoinette
Light, fluffy, jiggly and cloud-like, these soufflé pancakes are not just Instagrammable, but they also taste just as good as they look! We know how pancakes can leave you feeling stuffed sometimes, but not over here as they are made from a combination of pancake batter and the base of a soufflé recipe. With both sweet and savoury options, you can now have pancakes for both your main dish and dessert!
Slappy Cakes
Want to get creative with your pancakes? Then get cookin' at Slappy Pancakes, where you can choose a batter of five different flavours like buttermilk, chocolate, pandan, peanut and wholegrain to customize your own pancake masterpiece. And then pick from a choice of fruits, nuts, cheeses and meats (yes, you can have savoury pancakes here too) before you go crazy with toppings of your choosing.
Tiong Bahru Bakery Diner
Tiong Bahru Bakery is well known for their pastries, but their all-day dining concept serves up pancake classics too. Their Fluffy Brown Butter Pancake comes topped with Thai mangoes, lemongrass chantilly, caramelised almonds, and a drizzle of salted butter caramel sauce. Prefer something savoury? Go for the pancakes with grilled bacon, a sunny side up, goji berries, ricotta cheese, and maple syrup.
