You can get a decent meal at your nearest Subway outlet for around $6, but that's not to say you can't get more bang for your buck when getting your favourite sandwiches.
There's no official guidebook or cheat sheet for Subway sandwiches, but some former employees have exclusive insider hacks to share.
No more soggy subs
A Twitter thread started by ex-Subway employee @hajaarudin revealed that the solution to a soggy sub was simply to request for your buns to be triple toasted.
She swears by its taste and crunchiness, promising that the sub will retain its crunch even if it's kept cold or slathered in sauce.
However, only the Hearty Italian loaf is suitable for double or triple toasting.
Another way to avoid a soggy sub? You can actually ask for the dressing for your sandwich to be packed separately!
Get saucy
No Subway sub is complete without sauce, but if you're bored of the usual repertoire of sauces, there’s actually an extra option on the shelf.
One former employee revealed that it's possible to dress your sandwich with marinara sauce — the tangy tomato sauce that's usually exclusive to a Meatball Marinara.
If you’re not a fan of sauces on your sandwich or looking for a healthier option, you can request for salt and pepper seasoning instead.
@hajaarudin herself swears by a combination of ranch, thousand island, sweet onion, mayonnaise, olive oil, chilli, chipotle southwest and bbq sauce. It sounds crazy, but she says it goes well with everything on the menu!
However, Subway Singapore has a rule that only allows for a maximum of three sauces, so no guarantees that this request will be granted for sure!
Spice up your sub
According to Twitter user and ex-employee @aizatakrm, one of the best ways to jazz up your sub is to request for some onions to be placed on top of the cheese with a sprinkle of pepper before it goes into the oven to be toasted. This way, you'd get a peppery melty sandwich with slightly caramelised onions!
And if you’re ordering from the breakfast menu, you can request for your eggs to be seasoned before it's placed on the bun. They’re made to order after all!
As an alternative to the crunchy sub hack, it is also possible to request for only the meats and cheese to be put in the oven, allowing you to have pillowy soft buns without sacrificing any warm contents. A point to note is that this might be a little extra work for the employees!
No mess subs
The 6-inch is essentially a footlong cut into halves, but it turns out you can actually request for your subs to be cut in quarters or even smaller pieces too. Unfortunately, this also means that it’s easier for the ingredients to fall out as you're eating it.
To eat neat and prevent falling ingredients and dripping sauces, an employee recommends eating the sub horizontally instead. You might get some weird looks, but it works!
