5 Beginner-Friendly Hikes in Singapore That Are Less Than An Hour

Hiking doesn’t have to be hard. We know that not everyone loves the sun and heat, and we’re more likely to be couch potatoes than gym nuts. Getting into a healthier lifestyle requires baby steps, so these short, beginner-friendly routes will take up just a small part of your day. You won’t even have to put on the good hiking shoes!

1. Rower's Bay Park

Named after its popularity amongst dragon boaters and kayakers, Rower’s Bay Park at Lower Seletar Reservoir is actually one of the best secret spots to catch the sunset in Singapore. Walk along the park's boardwalk for some great waterside views, and there are also other amenities like shelters, vending machines and toilets, and there’s even a do-it-yourself bicycle repair station for cyclists!

2. Bukit Batok Nature Park

Developed on an abandoned quarry, Bukit Batok Nature Park offers cycling paths as well as a moderately easy hiking trail through the foliage. The granite outcrop is quite an extraordinary sight and quite uncommon to see in Singapore. For a bit more of a challenge or a dose of history, you can also veer onto the WWII memorial trail. It features an abundance of uphill steps and will require a bit of stamina!

3. Punggol Waterway Park

Not up for the wilderness of Coney Island? Why not venture to the waterside trail of Punggol Waterway Park instead? With all the scenic views around you we promise it will hardly feel like a workout at all. In fact, we won’t blame you if you just decide to sit down and relax instead, as the park truly instils a sense of calm.

4. Hampstead Wetlands Park

Next to The Oval is the tranquil Hampstead Wetlands Park. A small pocket of green in Seletar, the former marshland now looks like a lush English garden. The highlight is of course the beautiful pond complete with water lilies. It comes as no surprise why this is a popular spot for photographers and birdwatchers, as the lack of tall buildings make for a beautiful scene.

5. Lower Peirce Trail

Often overshadowed by the more popular MacRitchie Reservoir, Lower Peirce Reservoir is the second oldest reservoir in Singapore. Along its charming 900-metre boardwalk you'll be greeted with captivating views of the forests that line the reservoir as well as a variety of flora and fauna. This beginner-friendly trail is perfect for a leisurely hike with friends and family, and if you can drag yourself out of bed while it’s still dark, Lower Peirce Pavilion is one of the best places to catch the sunrise in Singapore!
