As most of us Southeast Asians would know, egg fried rice is awesome.
Though it comes in many variations depending on the culture, geographical location and personal tastes, egg fried rice is versatile, plain delicious, easy and hard to mess up...
… Or is it?
A BBC Food host has Asians all around the world screaming in disbelief, shock, and horror at the way she prepared the rice for her egg fried rice recipe.
As Asians, the act of cooking rice comes as second nature to us, and as easy as breathing. Which explains why we were all pretty fired up when we see someone managing to mess up such a simple and basic process.
Published on April 25 2019, the video starts off with British cook and BBC Food host Hersha Patel introducing her egg fried rice recipe, telling viewers not to be afraid.
You should be afraid. You'll come to see why.
Because instead of washing the rice first, she simply dumps them into a pot, and lets people in on 'a little rule' regarding rice-to-water ratio: One part rice, two parts water.
Of course as Asians, we already know that we only need the first knuckle of our index finger to figure out how much water to cook the rice with.
And looking at Hersha's, right away we can tell that that's way too much water.
But wait! It gets worse.
Because once it was half-cooked and still drowning in water, Hersha stops cooking it and proceeds to use a strainer to drain out all the cloudy water, and then rinse the rice under tap water.
The horror!!!!!!
Safe to say, our mums, grandmothers and ancestral matriarchs are now flipping over in their graves and would like to have a word with Hersha.
UK-based Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng also caught wind of the video and put on a parodic persona named Uncle Roger to react to Hersha’s egg fried rice recipe.
Like any Asian uncle, 'Uncle Roger' had a lot of criticism to dish out.
"Why you measure water with cup? Just use finger, finger! You put rice, put water until finger, until first joint," says Uncle Roger. "That's how you measure the water, not with British tea cup. Haiya..."
And when Hersha starts draining the rice, Uncle Roger is bewildered.
"What she doing!? What she doing!!!? Drain the r- OH MY GOD!" he unleashes.
“What the hell?" he reacts as he sees Hersha rinsing the rice under the tap. "You’re ruining the rice. First, you use colander to drain the rice and then you put water then why bother drying the rice? Who cooks rice like this? How did this woman get on BBC food?”
Ouch.
And it seems like many netizens out there are equally horrified.
Don't be Hersha! Let Uncle Roger teach you how to cook rice properly.
